When It Comes to Content, Author is the Authority!
Friday, December 18, 2009 | Posted by Aaron Goldman
At SES Chicago I was interviewed along with with Marshall Clark for Webmaster Radio discussing "Social Search and Distributive Reputation Systems" -- which is fancy for evaluation of content or, as Marshall calls it, "Page Rank for People." In this 7-minute clip, we discuss the various social media signals the search engines should be incorporating into their algorithms to improve relevancy. In a nutshell, the idea is that, when determining authority for a particular asset, the person who created the content should be weighted more heavily than the page on which …

Why Murdoch's Threats Don't Scare Google

Earlier this week, the Financial Times set the search world abuzz by reporting that Microsoft was in discussions with News Corp to compensate it for removing content from the Google index while still making it available it to Bing.
When I first heard about this potential deal, I posted my reaction on Digital Sea Change -- Search Wars: Desperate Times Call for Desperate Measures. My POV was also cited in two MediaPost articles (excerpts below). I won't rehash all my points here but …

Speculating on Who Will Buy Ask.com

Last week, I was cited in a MediaPost article about IAC selling off Ask.com. Here's the excerpt. More analysis follows.

Aaron Goldman, managing partner at Connectual, believes Microsoft could become a suitor to take more market share. "Since launching Bing, Microsoft's market share has gone up less than one-and-a-half points," he says. "Meanwhile, Yahoo is down one-and-a-half. So it's a wash. With Ask, Microsoft could add 4 share points in one fell swoop."

Things That Make You Go Hmmm...

If you read my Search Insider column today, you know I've been on a Top Ten list kick of late. You can also imagine what a dolt I felt like publishing the "Top Ten Ways to Use Search Data Beyond SEM" on the same day the Yahoo Microsoft search deal was announced. Give me a break though, my deadline was yesterday at noon! In an effort to save some face, I thought I'd chime in here with the ten most interesting plot lines -- aka unanswered questions -- surrounding this deal.
1. What does the deal mean for …

A Microsoft/Yahoo Search Deal is Inevitable, But What Will We Call the Combo?
Tuesday, July 21, 2009 | Posted by Aaron Goldman
Today Yahoo announced that Q2 earnings were up slightly year-over-year but revenue was down (as was the stock in after-hours trading) leading to a reprise of speculation over a potential search deal with Microsoft.
MediaPost has a good roundup of opinions, including mine, on what the deal might look like and what it would mean for the marketplace.
Here's what I went on record with. More commentary after the break...

Aaron Goldman, managing partner at advertising rep firm Connectual, thinks the "deal is inevitable."

What the Bing Launch Means for Marketers
Thursday, July 2, 2009 | Posted by Aaron Goldman
I'm quoted in today's MediaPost Online Media Daily commenting on the implications of recent data showing gains in search market share for Bing. I'd like to give some additional context for my POV and expand on it a bit.
The article starts off with, "Microsoft's new search engine Bing continues to take share from Google, Yahoo and Ask, albeit small. In June, Google shows a .3% drop, Yahoo a .17% drop, and Ask a .1% drop in usage share, according to NetApplications, a research firm."
My input comes …

Once a Search Guy, Always a Search Guy
Tuesday, June 2, 2009 | Posted by Aaron Goldman
Now I know how John Battelle feels. He wrote the book on search and forever became the expert on all things Google. Even these days, with John at the helm of conversational marketing firm, Federated Media, he still gets called to comment anytime Google sneezes.
So too, have I been branded a Search Insider for life. Like John, I don't mind it one bit, though. As the saying goes, "Call me what you like, just call me."
Truth is, I'm still quite smitten by search despite the …
